Can strategy games really work on a phone?
Strategy on a small screen sounds like a mistake. Tiny units, fat fingers, cramped maps. And yet some of my favorite mobile hours lately were in Frontline Cogs.
The trick good designers use is the hex grid. Discrete tiles mean you never miss a tap, and turn-based pacing removes the panic of real-time controls.
I've found the sweet spot is games built for the phone from the start, not ports stuffed onto it. When the UI is designed around a thumb, strategy sings.
If you've avoided the genre on mobile, start with something that has a patient tutorial and an offline skirmish mode. That low-stakes practice is where it finally clicked for me.
